As aviation professionals, we are held to a high standard because even small mistakes can lead to catastrophic accidents. However, over time, it's easy to become comfortable and begin to overlook the importance of routine procedures. This creeping sense of comfort is known as complacency—and it can kill. When we first begin a new job, we are often highly attentive, double-checking every step to avoid mistakes. But as we grow more confident and familiar with our duties, we can become complacent. We may start to skip safety checks or assume that nothing will go wrong because it hasn’t before. Unfortunately, this mindset is what often leads to preventable accidents and, in some cases, loss of life.
